Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 A 12.1 megapixel point-and-shoot camera like the Lumix DMC-FH20K ($179 list), the Lumix DMC-ZS5 ($179.95 list) features a 25 millimeter wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens with 12x optical zoom. This shooter also sports a 2.7-inch LCD display along with a slew of features including a .35-second auto focus time and 1.12-second start up.

The Lumix DMC-ZS5 comes in either a black or silver compact frame. The front of the camera contains nothing more than its Leica lens and built-in flash and the back is where you’ll find its 2.7-inch LCD screen and standard wheel menu. However, the top of this shooter features a manual control wheel next to its shutter to scroll through its manual shot settings including Intelligent Auto.

This feature will activate seven detection and correction functions including face and motion detection, scene detection and lighting detection when chosen through the scroll wheel and applies them to the your images. The camera can also shoot in Multi-aspect mode, which uses the CCD optical sensor to shoot three images simultaneously in all three aspect ratios: 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9. The Lumix DMC-ZS5 is also powered by Panasonic’s Venus Engine VI image processor. This processor is behind the camera’s Intelligent Auto Mode and Intelligent Resolution technology. Intelligent Resolution detects outlines, detailed textures and soft gradation areas and performs signal processing to those areas.
Also powered by the Venus Engine is Intelligent Zoom, which virtually extends the camera’s 12x optical zoom to 16x digital zoom. This image processor can also handle burst shooting at 2.3 frames per second at full resolution for five images. The Lumix DMC-ZS5 can also record 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. Topping off this camera’s list of major features is the ability to create and play slideshows from within the menu and a Panorama Assist Mode supported by Panasonic’s PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5 editing software.
